NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE ECMWF and ERS-1 Surface Winds over the Arabian Sea during July 1995

چکیده
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and Institut Francais Pour la Recherche et l’Exploitation de la Mer European Remote-Sensing Satellite, named IFR2, surface wind velocity data products are compared during July 1995 over the Arabian Sea. Substantial differences were found. The central positions of the maximum isotach were separated by 450 km, and the ECMWF maximum isotach was 2 m s21 higher than that of IFR2. IFR2 wind components contained about 10 times more variance than ECMWF winds for horizontal distances from 50 to 250 km. Along the 8.58N southern boundary of the Arabian Sea, ECMWF southward Ekman transport was higher than that of IFR2 by an amount that could be observed with current measurements. The ECMWF and IFR2 difference in upward transport of water into the Ekman layer, computed from wind stress curl, was large enough to measure.

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Relationship between Springtime Surface Temperature and Early Summer Blocking Activity over Siberia
Influence of springtime surface condition over Siberia upon subsequent summertime blocking activity over northeastern Siberia, and the Okhotsk sea is examined. It is found that when the surface temperature over Siberia is high in April (the high years), blocking events over northeastern Siberia, and the Okhotsk sea in May and June, occur more frequently than climatology. In the high years, a je...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Evaluation of the NCEP–NCAR and ECMWF 15- and 40-Yr Reanalyses Using Rawinsonde Data from Two Independent Arctic Field Experiments*
Many aspects of reanalysis data are of high quality over regions with sufficiently dense data, but the accuracy is uncertain over areas with sparse observations. NCEP–NCAR reanalysis (NNR) and ECMWF 15/40-Yr Re-Analysis (ERA-15 and ERA-40) variables are compared to two independent rawinsonde datasets from the periphery of the Arctic Ocean during the late 1980s and early 1990s: the Coordinated E...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Impact of the Reduced Drag Coefficient on Ocean Wave Modeling under Hurricane Conditions
Effects of new drag coefficient (Cd) parameterizations on WAVEWATCH III (WW3) model surface wave simulations are investigated. The new parameterizations are based on a coupled wind–wave model (CWW) and a wave tank experiment, and yields reduced Cd at high wind speeds. Numerical experiments for uniform winds and Hurricane Katrina (2005) indicate that the original Cd parameterization used in WW3 ...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Interdecadal Variation of the Southern Hemisphere Circulation
Previous studies examining the seasonal contrast and spatial structure of the interdecadal variation in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) atmospheric circulation and the relationship between this interdecadal variation and cyclone activity have been extended using the SH data generated by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology for 1972–92. The major findings of this study are the following: 1) In addi...
متن کاملSome notes on the characterization of two dimensional skew cyclic codes
A natural generalization of two dimensional cyclic code ($T{TDC}$) is two dimensional skew cyclic code. It is well-known that there is a correspondence between two dimensional skew cyclic codes and left ideals of the quotient ring $R_n:=F[x,y;rho,theta]/_l$. In this paper we characterize the left ideals of the ring $R_n$ with two methods and find the generator matrix for two dimensional s...
